Episode 54 Planet: Stuff
Learning concept of the episode: When you are making food or doing an experiment, it is important to follow directions. A small departure can lead to huge problems.
Story Summary
Bing and Bong discover a bakery on the Tiny Planet of stuff. Just as they are about to order a cake, the Chef Robot clocks out for the day, leaving Bing and Bong no choice but to bake for themselves. They proceed to bake without a recipe and meet a disastrous end. Bing then seeks out the Chef Robot who gives them a recipe card, which they don’t follow to exact specifications and again their cake flops. Bing returns to the chef and questions what went wrong. The chef clearly points out the quantities of the ingredients. Bing returns to the kitchen and this time, the cake is a success.

- Create a recipe book or cards using pictures; a step by step process
- Discuss what happens if given no direction
- Discuss what happens if we use too much of something or too little, e.g. washing powder or petrol

Resources
- Cake ingredients. Find a simple recipe
- Two bowls, spoons etc
- Weighing scales
- Oven
Guidelines
- Split a small group into two
- Give one group a recipe to follow and help them to mix a cake
- Give the other group no recipe and follow their instructions, let them put in any amount and ingredients they decide.
- Compare the two mixtures, do they look the same?
- Bake both and again compare. Taste if you dare!
- Discuss children’s food choices and dietary needs

Provide ingredients for the children to choose from. Seek parental permission for tasting. Check children do not have any food allergies.
