Learning concept of the episode: Simple two-dimensional shapes can be combines to make more complex shapes.

Story Summary

When Bing and Bong land on the Tiny Planet of Stuff, they spot a series of five red triangles, which lead the way to a big screen, where a red square and a parallelogram are waiting. The shapes arrange themselves to form various familiar objects. Intrigued, Bing takes the initiative and begins to arrange the shapes, a steamship, a fish and a duck, watching them come to life.

Mathematical Development 11: Use language such as ‘circle’ or ‘bigger’ to describe the shape and size of solid and flat shapes.

Preparation

• Watch the Tiny Planets episode 15 – Shapes Alive
• Read the Tiny Planets book Shapes Alive
• Talk about what Bing and Bong did in the story
• Photocopied game sheets
• Make up die

Talk about…..

• The shapes in the story, what colour, how many sides, etc.
• Explain that we are going to play a shape game

Title ‘Shape Alive’

Aim

To take turns and play a game involving shapes: square, circle, triangle and rectangle

Resources

• Game sheet for each child
• Die with shapes on
• Crayons or counters

Guidelines

• In groups of 4-6 sit around a table. Each child should have a game sheet and a crayon. Take it in turns to throw the die and the children have to colour the shape the die lands on.
