Egg-stra Large
Episode 8 Planet: Nature
Learning concept of the episode: Larger birds lay larger eggs and smaller birds lay smaller eggs.
Story Summary
As Bing and Bong stroll along the Tiny Planet of Nature, they encounter a family of small Flockers sitting on their nests. They watch as the small Flockers chicks begin to hatch. Further along their stroll, they encounter a family of larger Flockers and they also watch as the Flocker’s chicks hatch. When they encounter a giant Flocker egg at the top of a hill, Bing quickly figures out that there must be a giant parent Flocker close by. Sure enough, the parent returns just as the giant Flocker chick is hatched and Bing and Bong tiptoe away un-noticed.

Aim
For the children to look at size and relate it to the natural world
Resources
- Eggs, different sizes if possible or pictures of eggs in books. Include wild birds that are very small, hen’s eggs and ostrich eggs. Have pictures of the birds so that they can compare
- Cut outs of various size eggs from card and cut outs of chicks that fit exactly into the egg cut out
- Rulers
- Follow up work sheet (optional)
Guidelines
- Let the children look at examples of eggs, different kinds if possible, or let them look at pictures in books or encyclopedia.
- Mix up the different eggs and chicks and play a game where the children are to match the ones that are the same size. Have some that are very similar and ask the children to use a ruler to measure them
- Let them repeat the activity individually.
- Make a worksheet for them to follow up the activity with. Have pictures of different sized eggs and chicks and ask the children to draw a line to link the two that match (optional)
Key Vocabulary
