Episode 9 Planet: Nature
Learning concept of the episode: Animals communicate with each other by using different visual, auditory and tactile cues.
Story Summary
On the Tiny Planets of Nature, Bing and Bong encounter a Flocker named Doris. They try to make friends with her but she is frightened. It is only after Bing and Bong observe how the Flockers communicate with each other, and the Flockers observe the ways in which Bing and Bong communicate, that each group is able to use this knowledge to interact well with each other.

Preparation
- Watch the Tiny Planets episode
- Talk about what Bing and Bong did in the story
Talk about…..
- Ask the children why they thought that Bing and Bong could not communicate with Doris.
- Discuss different animal noises and how animals communicate
- Talk about our languages, English, French, German, Chinese etc.

Follow-on Activities
- Sing Old Mac Donald putting in other animals including, elephant, tiger etc.
- Play a game where pictures of animals are put onto head bands. Each child wears a head band not knowing what their animal is. The other children have to make the animal’s noise and the child guesses what it is.
- Listen to simple phrases in different languages e.g. French, German, Hindi and Chinese.Animal Sounds Game
Aim
For children to identify the different sounds that animals make and to identify an animal from it’s sound
Resources
- Pre-bought animal soundtracks game or:-
- Tape of different animal sounds or you can make the sounds yourself
- Pictures of different animals featured on the tape or models of the animals
Guidelines
- Play the tape to the children letting them listen to the various sounds.
- Let the children then look at the pictures or models of the animals.
- Repeat the tape letting the children identify the noise and link it to the animal..
- Then show the pictures alone without the tape and ask the children to make the sounds.

Health & Safety
Ensure that if the children are playing the tape themselves it is a tape machine suitable for children to use and they are supervised. Battery operated is preferable as there is no electricity or wires for the children to be in danger of.
