Flocker Flicker
Episode 44 Planet: light and colour
Learning concept of the episode: Animation works by presenting a series of still pictures very quickly, one after another. The result is that the pictures appear to move.
Story Summary
Drawn in by an animated neon sign, Bing and Bong arrive at nickelodeon. Bong cranks the handle and Bing is able to view the simple animation of a Charlie Chaplin Flocker on a diving board. Excited, Bong cranks the handle faster and faster, causing the image to blur and the nickelodeon to fall apart! But Bing puts it back together and, upon examining the carousel of images, notices if Bing flips them, it gives the impression of a moving image. Bing picks up two pictures that have fallen out of the carousel and, with Bong’s help, determines the correct order and sets them in line to view them again

Aim
To experience how animation is created by making their own flick book
Resources
- Small squares of paper
- Pencils
- Stapler
Guidelines
- There are two ways to make these, either staple together 6 or more pieces of paper (the more the better) or just 2 pieces of paper.
- For six or more ask the children to draw a simple stick man starting on the first sheet with him at the bottom then on the next sheet slightly higher up etc.
- When the book is flicked it will give the impression of the man jumping.
- If using 2 sheets, draw the man at the bottom on the first sheet and halfway up on the second. Using a pencil roll the first sheet up then use the pencil to unroll it quickly. This again gives the impression of the man jumping.
Key Vocabulary
Animation, moving picture
Health & Safety
Adult supervision is required for the stapling of the paper
